Brexit and Democracy

The deadline is approaching. We live under the shadow of a possible no-deal. A chaotic situation persists. The PM’s request to the queen to suspend the parliament for five weeks was ruled illegal by the Supreme Court. If the prorogation had succeeded, it could have risked the reputation for democracy that British citizens are most proud of.

The word “democracy” (“rule by the people”) was invented by Athenians around 508 BC. Below is the image of a stele about the anti-tyranny law of 377/6 B.C. that reflects Athenian uncertainty concerning the future of their democracy.  It depicts Democracy crowning Demos (the Athenian People).
